Welcome to the 'Nu-Tread Tech' page. Here you will find information regarding many components of your vehicle. These issues have been frequently asked of our service staff and we consider it an honor to be able to pass along to you some of the things you might want (or need) to know about your car. Keep in mind that these are mainly 'general recommendations' - your owner's manual should be the most reliable source of information for maintenance intervals.

Tires

If you suspect that you may have a tire problem or are just unsure of the condition of your tires, bring the vehicle in to Nu-Tread Tire And Auto to have them inspected by a trained professional.
Proper tire inflation is one of the keys to safe and comfortable driving. The air pressure of each tire, including the spare, should be checked monthly. Always check the air pressures before a long trip. They should be checked when 'cold', meaning before the vehicle has been driven one mile or at least three hours after the vehicle has been stopped. Under-inflated tires will cause irregular wear (from a heat build-up) and can lead to loss of control while driving. You may surprised to learn that a tire can lose up to half of its proper pressure and not appear to be flat. Tires that are over-inflated will make them more vulnerable to impacts and will cause them to wear unevenly.
Tires must be properly balanced to ensure that the wheels turn with their weights evenly distributed. Otherwise, you may encounter shimmy (shaking from side to side) or tramping (hopping up and down). At the least, an improperly balanced tire will probably result in uneven wear.
Tires should be rotated regularly to promote more uniform wear on each tire. They should be rotated every 6,000-8,000 miles unless your owner's manual specifies a different time frame. Tire rotation is a simple and inexpensive way to ensure that you get the most out of your tires. Rotation for our tire customers is absolutely free for the life of your tires, saving you money!
A tire is unsafe for driving if the tread depth is less than 1/16 of an inch. Use a penny to easily check the tread depth. Insert the penny with Lincoln's head first into the tread. If the top of Lincoln's head can be seen, the tire should be replaced.
Oil Changes

Unless your vehicle manufacturer suggest otherwise (refer to owner's manual), your oil and filter should be changed every 3,000-6,000 miles. The actual frequency will depend on the type of driving conditions to which your vehicle is exposed. Stop-and-go driving and other severe conditions will require more frequent oil and filter changes (i.e. towards the 3,000 mile recommendation).
Alignment

Hitting a curb or pothole (or otherwise incurring a bad jolt) can throw your vehicle out of alignment, resulting in damage to your tires. Check your tires monthly, looking for uneven wear, a sign that an alignment may be in order. If you notice the vehicle 'pulling' or if you experience a 'vibration', you should have the alignment checked by a professional.
